A heavy police presence was called out to a residence on West 1oth Street on Thursday afternoon after a call came in involving a possible sexual assault.

According to the Sioux Falls Police Department the incident began earlier Tuesday at the Rushmore Motel where the suspect assaulted his former girlfriend.

The woman then returned to her home in the 900 block of West 10th Street. The suspect followed her into the home were he sexually assaulted her, said police spokesman Sam Clemens.

The suspect kept the woman confined to the home until Thursday morning when she was able to flee to a local hospital, where she reported the sexual assault.  The suspect then sent a message to the woman saying that he was going to harm himself because she had called the police.

After a brief standoff a SWAT team and police negotiators were able to convince the suspect to leave the residence without incident. At that time the suspect was arrested on rape and assault charges.
