This Is The Staggering Price Tag On Iowa’s 2024 Storm Season So Far

It's been an expensive year for Iowa when it comes to natural disasters.

There has been no shortage of storms in Iowa this year, in fact it's been a record-breaking storm season. Nearly 100 tornadoes made their way through Iowa in April and May alone and there were more that followed after those two months.

Among the worst was the EF-4 tornado that tore through Greenfield in May, staying on the ground for over 40 miles and destroying many homes.

Even for those of us used to tornadoes, that's still a lot of tornadoes to deal with. And unfortunately in some tornadoes, like Greenfield and Minden, lives were lost and people were injured.

That hasn't been the only aftermath of the twisters. All of the damage to property, buildings, houses, and possessions has come with an insane total price tag. Des Moines Register obtained some stats from the Iowa Insurance Division.

The Price Tag

So far this storm season, Iowans have 85,725 insurance claims to cover $480 million in damage. But that's only part one.

The other half of this is FEMA. Following the storms, about 6,400 Iowans qualify for help from FEMA totaling $60.5 million.

So thus far, according to these two resources, storms in Iowa in 2024 are carrying a price tag of almost $550 million.

And as we all know, it isn't that outlandish to see a late summer/early fall tornado pop up. Hopefully that won't be the case for any Iowans this year, it's safe to say we've had more than our fair share of storms in 2024.
