Son of Iowa Basketball Legend Earns his Own Scholarship
When you talk Iowa basketball and say the name Kingsbury, you think of three-point shots raining down. Before Caitlin Clark made the logo three her thing at Iowa, there was Chris Kingsbury.
Chris Kingsbury came to the Iowa men's basketball program from Ohio. He was the state player of the year and a McDonald's All-American his senior year in high school. He committed to the University of Iowa in 1993. As a freshman, Kingsbury would average just over 8 points per game. His sophomore season was his best at Iowa. He set the school record for most threes made in a game and scored a career-high 32 points against Northwestern.
Another memorable game for Kingsbury came during his junior year at Iowa. He scored 30 points and helped Iowa top Connecticut in the Great Alaska Shootout in 1995. Chris left Iowa after his junior season and played professional basketball until retiring in the late 1990s.
Now, the son of Chris Kingsbury, Carter Kingsbury, is moving up the roster in Iowa City. The Des Moines Register reports that Carter has earned a full basketball scholarship with the Hawkeyes. The redshirt junior has appeared in 13 games during his Iowa career, scoring 12 points. Kingsbury is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
The Register reports that Kingsbury said the scholarship "means a lot to my family." He also said he was grateful to coach Fran McCaffery for the opportunity.
Congratulations Carter! Let's see those threes fall at Carver this season!
