BCA Shares New Details About Minnesota Officer Shooting During Dead Baby Investigation

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has released new information regarding an officer-involved shooting that was connected to the death of an infant.

A statement previously issued by the Brooklyn Park Police Department indicated the shooting occurred after officers were sent to a residence in the 8700 block of Queens Gardens North around 4 AM Sunday and located a seven month old child, who was described as being in critical condition. 

The news release said the child was rushed to a nearby hospital, but later died. Officers at the scene were investigating the circumstances surrounding the child's death when they encountered a man with a gun.

One officer fired his gun and wounded the armed man, the statement says. The officers at the scene immediately began providing emergency medical care until the man could be transported to a hospital for treatment. 

BCA Shares New Details About Shooting That Followed Baby's Death in Brooklyn Park

A news release issued by the BCA identified the man shot by an officer as 24-year-old Oronde Neal Reese. The Brooklyn Park man, who was the infant’s father, is in a hospital in stable condition. 

Officials identified the officer who fired his service weapon as Momodou Dibba, who has been on the force for three months. He’s since been placed on standard leave, officials say. 

The BCA’s investigation indicated Reese was distraught after learning about his child’s death. He entered the home while officers were there and locked himself in a bedroom. 

Another person living in the home forced open the door and told officers Reese was in a closet and that he had a gun. A physical struggle then ensued and that’s when Bibba fired his service weapon, authorities say. 

Agents recovered a handgun and spent shell casings at the scene. The officers body-worn cameras captured the shooting, the BCA says. 

Investigators will present their findings without a charging recommendation to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office upon completion of the investigation. 

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the infant’s death.
