Star Trek’s Captain Kirk Headlines Fundraising Event in Sioux Falls

Over 2000 people bought tickets to watch William Shatner (aka Captain James T. Kirk) from the television and motion picture series "Star Trek" speak on Wednesday night in Sioux Falls.

Shatner beamed into the Sioux Empire to be the headliner of the 43rd annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner and Children’s Charity Fundraiser at the Sioux Falls Convention Center on Wednesday night, (October 30).

According to Dakota News Now, throughout the years, the Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner has helped to raise millions of dollars for children’s charities in the name of law enforcement throughout the Sioux Falls area.

The dinner’s co-chair Bill Mickelson, told Dakota News Now, “The thing that is exciting about South Dakota is, year in and year out, they appreciate everything that is being done for them. Public safety is a priority and this is the one night that is special to law enforcement and special to the business leaders here."

Two area law enforcement officers were recognized during this year's event, and they received the William J. Janklow Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award.

Sergeant Corey Hartley of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and Brian Schnabel from DCI were the recipients of the award this year.

In addition to Shatner, some of the other notable guests in attendance were South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, U.S. Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds, Congressman Dusty Johnson, Attorney General Marty Jackley, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken and Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum.

By the looks of the Dakota News Now footage from the event, it appears a few people in attendance got into the Halloween spirit early by wearing some Star Trek apparel.

I wonder if anyone in the crowd was brave enough to wear a Michael Myers mask?

The Myers mask also has a connection to William Shatner.

The mask worn by the killer in the 1978 motion picture "Halloween", was of course a modified version of a Star Trek Captain Kirk mask made by Don Post studios in 1975.
