Six Artists To Cover Lyon Park Sidewalks In Chalk This Saturday

I've always been fascinated by people who can pick up a pencil, pen, paintbrush, or even a piece of sidewalk chalk and somehow turn a blank surface into something that ends up looking incredible.

You know the type. They can look at an empty piece of paper and, 20 minutes later, there's a beautiful landscape, a remarkably accurate portrait, or some kind of artistic masterpiece staring back at you that even Bob Ross himself would say, damn! That looks awesome!

Unfortunately, I never received the artistic gene; I can barely draw a stick figure without making it look like it needs serious medical attention.

Artistic talent is definitely not something I was blessed with.

Thankfully, there are people in Sioux Falls who actually know what they're doing. And this Saturday, August 8, you can watch some of those talented people put their skills on full display during the second annual Chalk Sioux Falls event at Lyon Centennial Park.

Six different artists will spend the day creating chalk masterpieces right on the sidewalk pavement inside the park, giving everyone who stops by a front-row seat to their creative process.

And honestly, there's something pretty cool about watching a blank piece of pavement slowly transform into a work of art right before your eyes.

The event's organizer, Doug Holubek, helped bring Chalk Sioux Falls back to the city after remembering similar events from years ago.

Holubek told Dakota News Now, “That’s why I really wanted to bring an event here because there was one, I think several years ago, and it, for whatever reason, didn’t keep going, and I wanted to bring an event back, one like the events I’ve been going to.”

Apparently Sioux Falls agrees.

Holubek says the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, which has encouraged him to keep the event going and make it an annual tradition.

If you're an art lover, this is definitely worth checking out. And even if you're not particularly artistic, welcome to the club; you can still have a great time watching these artists work their magic.

The event is free to attend, and you'll have the opportunity to purchase voting tokens for the People's Choice competition and help decide which artist gets to do a little bragging.

There will also be a designated area where kids and other visitors can grab some chalk and attempt to create their own masterpieces.

The artists are scheduled to begin drawing shortly after 8:00 AM Saturday, so head down to Lyon Centennial Park, grab some coffee, take a stroll, and watch Sioux Falls sidewalks turn into giant works of art.
