Possibly Radioactive Walmart Shrimp Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota
FDA Advises Public Not to Eat, Sell, or Serve Certain Imported Frozen Shrimp Sold At Walmart!
The Food and Drug Administration has issued an urgent warning advising consumers to avoid certain Great Value frozen shrimp products sold at Walmart due to potential contamination with Cesium-137, a dangerous radioactive isotope.
What Happened?
U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected possible Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers at four American ports, prompting an immediate FDA investigation.
While testing confirmed the presence of the radioactive material in containers from Indonesian distributor BMS Foods, officials emphasize that no contaminated shrimp is known to have entered the U.S. food supply.
Still, the FDA says consumers are urged to throw away any of the Great Value shrimp listed below.
Products to Avoid
As a precautionary measure, the FDA recommends discarding these specific Great Value frozen raw shrimp products:
- Lot code 8005540-1 (Best by: 3/15/2027)
- Lot code 8005538-1 (Best by: 3/15/2027)
- Lot code 8005539-1 (Best by: 3/15/2027)
Health Risks
Cesium-137 exposure can cause serious health complications, including radiation sickness and increased cancer risk.
The radioactive isotope is particularly dangerous because it can remain in the body for extended periods.
FDA Response
The agency has banned all products from BMS Foods until the company resolves the contamination issues.
This proactive approach demonstrates the FDA's commitment to protecting American consumers from potential radiation exposure through contaminated seafood products.
