The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, including the Sioux Falls area. The Advisory is in effect from 3:00 AM until 9:00 PM Sunday (1/17/26).

Cold temperatures combined with strong winds and snow showers will create hazardous driving conditions and whiteouts, especially in open areas.

* WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations up to one inch but
  locally higher in very narrow snow bands. Winds gusting as high as
  40 to 55 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of northwest and west central Iowa, southwest
  Minnesota, northeast Nebraska, and central, east central, south
  central, and southeast South Dakota.

* WHEN...From 3 AM to 9 PM CST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Falling and blowing
  snow will lead to areas of quick and sudden reductions in
  visibility, making travel difficult, especially in rural areas
  that are prone to blowing snow. Strong winds could cause tree
  damage.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strong winds and snow showers will result in
  visibilities as low as one half mile at times. Visibility and road
  conditions may change rapidly over short distances.
