A local South Dakota animal shelter is unable to take in more animals into their care. They are at full capacity and need your help ASAP.

Sturgis and Meade County Animal Shelter is warning animal lovers that they possibility have to turn away pets that need second chances. The shelter has no room, and the waiting list continues to grow.

Our news partners at Dakota News Now are reporting the shelter has 15 cat kennels and currently has multiple cats in several of the kennels. The shelter also has 13 kennels for dogs. Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater tells Dakota News Now that the community needs to be patient during this difficult situation and be responsible pet owners.

“We encourage the community to act responsibly when it comes to pet ownership. Just today (Friday), someone abandon two puppies in the park. Please remember that abandoning and surrendering animals has a direct impact on the shelter’s ability to provide proper care.”

Right now, the staff at Sturgis and Meade County Animal Shelter is placing dogs in foster care and having cats stay in "non-traditional space." This includes kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and basically wherever staff can find space.

Ideally, having more people adopt would help. Sturgis and Meade County Animal Shelter has a whole list of adoptable pets waiting for new homes. If you can't welcome new furry friends to your home, the shelter has an Amazon Wish List with supplies they need.
