Around $489 Million and counting is waiting to be claimed by Iowans who, in all likelihood, are completely unaware of its existence. How has this much money gone unclaimed you might ask?

Here's what the Iowa Treasury Office has to say about it:

Each year, millions of dollars in unclaimed property are turned over to my office for safekeeping when financial institutions and businesses are unable to locate the owners of the abandoned funds. Examples of unclaimed property include checking and savings accounts, uncashed checks, stocks, bonds, insurance benefits, utility security deposits or even valuables from safe deposit boxes.

On the website, you can search your name and information to find out if there is any money you have left unclaimed in the state of Iowa. There is also a link to the U.S. National database, as well as an interactive map you can utilize.

Iowa isn't alone with this unclaimed treasure. Nearly every state has a similar database you can check for money owed to you.

To find out if Iowa owes you and your family any money, get the easy process started at the Iowa Treasury Website.
