Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech Was Improvised
Today (1/15), on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, we honor Dr. King's birthday and his critical role in advancing racial equality in the United States.
While reading about today I learned something regarding his 'I Have a Dream' speech that I didn't know - he improvised parts of it and went off script.
According to the Wall Street Journal, during the speech singer Mahalia Jackson urged Dr. King to tell the audience "about the dream," and Dr. King ad-libbed that iconic line.
If you've never read or heard the speech that Dr. King gave that day - August 28, 1963 - do yourself a favor and take the time to listen to the 17-minute message.
Yet to this day the speech rings true in so many areas of our culture. Following is the YouTube video of Dr King's speech given that day during the March on Washington.
