SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A dedication ceremony is planned for a mural that was painted by residents in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Sioux Falls.

The artwork in Meldrum Park of the city's Whittier Middle School neighborhood was the brainchild of one of the school's social studies teachers, Lela Himmerich, who wanted to help spruce up the park and show off the area's diversity. Her students offered suggestions.

More than two-dozen people worked on the concept. The design was prepared by lead artist Dave Lowenstein and assistants Ashley Laird and Nate Buchholz.

The event is scheduled at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
