With Summit League Tourament Looming, Jackrabbits Rout Coyotes In Regular Season Finale
There were two main storylines heading into the South Dakota – South Dakota State match-up in Brookings Saturday, and both ended in disappointment.
For the Jackrabbits, they discovered right before tipoff that Fort Wayne had beaten Omaha in overtime, thus securing the number two seed in next week’s Summit League Tournament, and the potential day off between quarterfinal and semifinal games, sliding SDSU down to third, meaning for the Jacks to win the tournament they’ll have to play three straight days.
For the Coyotes, they were looking to erase the painful memory of an 0-of-14 start Thursday at North Dakota State, while attempting to stay out of foul trouble in Brookings. Unfortunately for USD, they missed their first four shots at Frost Arena, fell behind 16-3 early, and saw center Trevor Gruis go to the bench after five minutes wit two quick fouls.
In the end, SDSU won the 209th meeting between to two schools 75-61.
All five Jackrabbit starters scored in double figures led by Jordan Dykstra’s Summit League best 8th double-double of the season (19 points/10 rebounds). Brayden Carlson added 15 points, Jake Bittle 13, Cody Larson 12, and Chad White 10.
SDSU shot 45 percent and outrebounded USD 40-29.
Brandon Bos tried to keep the Coyotes in it with 21 points off the bench, while Tyler Flack added 16, but Gruis was shutout after playing just 13 minutes because of foul trouble, and the rest of the USD roster was 5-of-29. as the Coyotes shot 29 percent for the game.
With Gruis on the bench much of the game, the Jacks dominated inside, outscoring USD 30-8 in the paint.
South Dakota State (18-11/10-4) opens Summit League play as the number three seed, Sunday, March 9th at 8:30pm in Sioux Falls against sixth seed Western Illinois.
South Dakota (12-17, 6-8) play the early game of that session, as the number five seed against number four Denver at 6:00pm. The winner of that game will play top seeded North Dakota State in the semifinals, Monday March 10th.
