Why Would Anyone Walk Away From the Big Leagues?
Despite numerous claims over the years, no body has truly ‘seen it all’ in the sports world, but Tom Savage has certainly seen a lot.
The Sioux Falls native has experienced life in the front offices of NBA, WNBA, and the IndyCar circuit, as well as with NFL players, all part of his work in media relations for the past two decades.
But after years of working in some of the most dynamic environments in all of professional sports, Tom decided where he really needed to be was back home with his daughter Isabella in Sioux Falls.
He’s written about his life in pro sports and his path back home in a new book, ‘What’s Next?’, which is available online as an e-book.
I asked him about the daunting task of writing a 200-page book:
Our paths first crossed back in the early 1990′s, when I was working at KSFY-TV and Tom was in the Sports Information Department at what was then Sioux Falls College (now the University of Sioux Falls).
I remember recognizing early on in my dealings with Tom that he was as thorough, organized, and professional as anyone I had ever worked with. You always knew when you were dealing with a Tom Savage media packet because everything you needed, and a whole lot more, was in there.
From the college ranks, Tom transitioned to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, back during the team’s Continential Basketball Association days.
Tom told me it was those two stints, where he wore a number of different hats, that really laid the foundation of what became a very successful career in professional sports:
From Sioux Falls, it was on to stops in the NBA with the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Indiana Pacers, and Seattle SuperSonics, where despite being at the height of his profession, he quickly realized the day-to-day was far from glamorous:
Eventually, the toll of all of the travel, late nights, and being away from his family, forced Tom to re-evaluate what he was doing with his life, paving the way for his decision to walk away from pro sports three years ago:
‘What’s Next?’ is filled with great stories from all of Tom’s stops in what was an incredible journey in professional sports. But on top of chronicling the moments along the way, there was a larger, and very important message, Tom wanted to share in writing the book:
Tom still dabbles in the sports world from time-to-time as a free lance writer for the Argus Leader. These days he’s living life with a completely different perspective on what exactly defines success:
