[UPDATE] Why do Wieners Come in Packs of 10 and Wiener Buns Come in Packs of 8?

(BELOW) is the original story reflecting research on the great Wiener / Bun controversy.

(ABOVE) UPDATE:  After further research this video was found.  This guy had the nads to contact the “CORPORATE WIENER” goons and put them on the phone with the “BIG BUN” interests.  Well done.

So why the heck is it that Wieners come in packs of 10 and Wiener Buns come in packs of 8?

Nobody at any of the major hot dog companies can offer a convincing rationale for why things are packaged the way they are.

After much web related research, conversation, and reflection, it seems clear that the reason you get ten hot dogs and eight buns per package is because meat packers like things that come in pounds and bakers hate things that come in tens.

Your standard package of hot dogs comes ten to the pound.  If you’ve got 10,000 pounds of hot dogs you know you’ve got 10,000 packages.  Simple.

The situation with bakers is a bit murkier. Here are some of the “explanations” you’ll hear: (1) We do it that way because everybody else does.  (2) If we started doing ten to the package we’d have to charge more, consumers wouldn’t like that.  (3) There is something inherent in baking tray or oven design that makes ten impractical to produce.  (This apparently is not true)  (4) Ten-packs are a clumsy shape and tend to get broken up when they’re tossed around on supermarket shelves.

Did that clear anything up for ya?  Personally I think the fix is in.  The “Big Bun Tycoons”  have reached some sort of covert, under the table, corporate kick-back,  deal with the “Big Wiener Fat Cats” so that the average patriotic American has to dish out more of there hard earned cash to bed down their favorite tubular meats.  Or…Is it the “Communists”??  Sing along with the song below while you think about it…
