South Dakota was admitted as the 40th state in the Union, November 2, 1889.

But seven years earlier, when it was still the Dakota Territory, a pair of Swedish brothers went to work as painters for a contractor, eventually buying him out, and launching Norberg Paints, which is still going, and still family owned, now with two locations in Sioux Falls.

That 1882 start date makes Norberg the oldest surviving business in South Dakota, and puts it on Supercompressor.com's list of the Oldest Surviving Business in All 50 States.

The oldest business among South Dakota's neighboring states is in Nebraska, where Omaha's Florence Mill got its' start in 1843, under the supervision of Brigham Young. It is now a museum and art gallery.

Iowa's oldest business is Breitbach's Country Dining in Sherrill, which opened in 1852 and was granted its' liquor license by President Millard Fillmore

In Minnesota, the auction company of Fred W. Radde & Sons opened in New Germany in 1886.

The oldest business on the list is the Shirley Plantation in Hopewell, Virginia, which has been around since 1613. 11 generations of Shrileys have worked the plantation over the years.

The newest business on the list belongs to our neighbors to the North. Bismarck's Peacock Alley restaurant opened its' doors in 1933 and has hosted John F. Kennedy, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson over the years.
