What’s Left to Cross off Your U.S. Travel Bucket List?

I’m hitting a travel milestone this week.

When I arrive in Washington to visit Seattle for a few days, it will mark the 48th – and final – of the contiguous United States that I have visited. Only Alaska will stand in the way of me visiting all 50 states.

Now that I’ve visited nearly every state, I thought I’d change my focus to recap some of the incredible things I’ve experienced over the years.

To do that, I compared my travel log to Thrillist’s ‘The Great American Bucket List: 50 Things You Must Do Before You Die’.

Here’s what I’ve accomplished (with some slight variations where noted) so far:

  1. Walk the Freedom Trail in Boston
  2. Catch a Broadway Show in New York City (Wicked to be exact)
  3. Drive Cape Cod to Provincetown in the summer
  4. Bike the National Mall in DC (I’ve walked it a few times, does that count?)
  5. Feel the mist of Niagara Falls
  6. Drive from Miami to Key West (I made it as far as Key Largo, got bored, and turned back. Partial credit?)
  7. Visit the Alamo in San Antonio
  8. Drink a mint julep at the Kentucky Derby (I did consume a mint julep at Churchill Downs, but it was March, so no derby that day)
  9. Stroll the French Quarter in New Orleans (During the day and at night. Two COMPLETELY different experiences!)
  10. Catch a game at Wrigley Field (In true old school fashion, it was a day game!)
  11. Ride the Millennium Force at Cedar Point (The closest I got was King’s Island, 200 miles away, in Mason, Ohio, where I rode the legendary roller coaster, The Racer)
  12. Eat “food on a stick” at the Iowa State Fair (Not Iowa, but I have feasted on sticked fare at both the South Dakota and Minnesota State Fairs)
  13. Hear the roar of the Indy 500 (Toured the museum here, but no race)
  14. Drive the Pacific Coast Highway
  15. Gaze at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park
  16. Stroll Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles
  17. Drive into the Bryce Canyon Amphitheater (Been here, don’t remember going to the amphitheater)
  18. Watch the fish fly at Pike Place Market (I add this one to the list this week)
  19. Visit Mount Rushmore
  20. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge (With my intense fear of heights, I’m proud of myself for driving across it a few times)
  21. See the Hoover Dam/gamble in Vegas on the same day
  22. See a lava flow in Hawaii

I’ve seen some great things and had some incredible experiences, but with less than half of the list checked off, I’ve obviously got some work to do!

Now it’s your turn.
