Homecoming week for small town America is a week that sees the whole town get involved in activities, support and especially the Friday night homecoming football game.

In Hartford South Dakota that football game is as good as it gets in the state of South Dakota for homecoming games.

The feel, the reminiscing, the family atmosphere accompanied with a brand of football that has been at the top of the South Dakota High School football scene for decades makes for a fun Friday night.

I grew up in Sioux Falls and went to Roosevelt High School.  Don't get me wrong, as a student at RHS, I loved homecoming week.

From the activities to the game to the dance, it all was fun, but you didn't get the alums coming back to the game like you do in a small town nor do you get the whole community supporting the week because of the simple fact there are three public high school's in Sioux Falls.

It doesn't make it bad, there is just a different feeling around a homecoming week in a small town in my opinion and its a neat atmosphere to be around.

According to Jeff Danielsen, the West Central School District Superintendent, they usually get somewhere around 3,000 fans in attendance which is great considering the towns population is actually just under 3,000 at 2,926.  I would anticipate even more for this years game.

Some of that is the visiting crowd who usually is well represented as most opposing teams envy the success of West Central in football and would love to witness a upset, but it also represents a good amount of fans and alums who love to return for homecoming week and support the Trojans.

Mr. Danielsen went on to say "It's an exciting week for any school. The activities all lead into a great Friday with the parade and the football game." He added "We have so much community support and that is great to see."

The Trojans are currently 3-1 after a loss to Madison two weeks ago and will continue to be on a mission to add another title to the crowded trophy case in Hartford.

The homecoming atmosphere will once again be great on Friday night as West Central welcomes a longtime foe in Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids is usually right in the thick of things as well, but this year they are off to a slow start at 1-3, but don't let the record mislead you, as they will be ready to upset the Trojans for sure and their fan base will be out in force.

Game time is 7pm and get there early as parking will fill up fast and there will be a big crowd in attendance.

I'll be there and I look forward to seeing all you there too.  Whether you have a team that you are rooting for or not, bring out the family or some friends for a good time and some good football.
