Plan a Solo Vacation Month is a celebration designed for those who like to experience the world alone, rather than being constrained by the demands of friends and family.

The solo traveler is a special breed.  Talk to travel experts and they'll tell you the lone traveler is more spontaneous than most.  He or she doesn't like to have their travel agenda shaped by others.

Simply by planning to hit the road alone, anyone can become a part of this international celebration - yes, even you.

Before I got into motorcycling, I would have never gone on a trip by myself.  But now, I find it to be one of the most relaxing things I can do to re-energize myself.

I can still remember my first trip alone.  Friends and family would look at me and ask why I would want to go on a vacation by myself.  Then their next question would be if Suzette and I were have problems.

Don't get me wrong - we still enjoy each other's company and vacationing together, but we both also look forward to our time away from one another.

Read any of the studies done on the subject and you'll find that experts actually encourage you to take a trip by yourself.  It's one of the most relaxing - and exhilarating - things you can do.

You can wake up whenever you want, stop whenever you want, eat whenever you want - you don't have to worry about anyone else but yourself.

One of my favorite things to do when I vacation alone is to go to a restaurant.  Trust me, if you've never dined alone, you're missing out on something special - it's amazing what you'll see.

One of my favorite memories was when I sat next to an elderly couple while I was vacationing alone in Duluth.  They maybe said a total of 10 words to each other, but it's as if they were "one."  He knew just when to hand her the salt and pepper and vise versa.

It really was an eye-opening experience.  It taught me the true depth of love a person can have for another, and how love truly does grow with age.

So, if you're looking at the calendar and trying to figure out when and where to take a vacation this summer, try to block out a couple of days for yourself.  You won't regret it!
