The Save Our Neighborhood opposition to the proposed Walmart at 85th and Minnesota crossed another hurdle and the voters will soon make the final decision.

On Thursday Sioux Falls City Clerk Lorie Hogstad served a written declaration regarding the validity of over 2,000 petition signatures. It turns out that 1,159 of the signatures in question were rejected, leaving 5,343 signatures which is enough to place the referendum on the April 8, 2014, ballot.  The required number of signatures is 5,089.

The Sioux Falls City Council adopted Ordinance No. 49-13 on August 6, 2013, which rezoned the property located at the Southwest corner of East 85th Street and South Minnesota Avenue. A referendum petition (“Petition”) was then presented to the City Clerk’s Office on August 30, 2013. On September 27, 2013, the City Clerk certified that a sufficient number of qualified electors had signed the Petition based on a required random sampling and considered it filed with the City Clerk’s Office.

According to a release from the City of Sioux Falls, Hogstad says the Affidavit review process revealed a signature validity rate of 82 percent, which closely mirrored the 86 percent validity rate from our earlier random sampling.
