Friday was the first day for outside volunteers to enter Delmont for the purpose of lending a hand. The call was answered, plus some other facts regarding the endeavor during the first week.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety released the tornado recovery figures to date in Delmont:

As of Friday, 179 volunteers have registered at the Volunteer Reception Center, which opened Friday. The center is open 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM each day.

Also 27 cases have been opened with the American Red Cross and Multi Agency Resource Center to assist citizens with recovery needs. The center has been opened two days and will close at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday).

Plus 27 families and 110 individuals have picked up supplies from the donation center.

Latest figures compiled Thursday showed 3,307 meals and 4,817 snacks had been provided by the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.

The battle is far from over and continued contributions are welcome. People interested in supporting the Delmont tornado response are asked to consider making donations of money or items that can be used by the survivors.

For financial donations, a fund has been established at the First State Bank in Delmont, Tripp, Geddes and Armour. Officials working with the Donations Management Center report that items needed by the survivors include non-perishable food and snacks, household cleaners, personal care items, can openers and equipment to work with debris cleanup (gloves, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc.).

The South Dakota Department of Public Service says donations of new white goods (appliances) need to be coordinated through the Volunteer Reception Center.  Contact person is Lisa Adler at 605-212-9605.

Donated items can be taken to the Donations Management Center, located in the Delmont American Legion.   Please enter Delmont from the east, using 284th Street.

Volunteers are asked to enter Delmont from the south. The Volunteer Reception Center is at the baseball diamond.
