Veteran’s Memorial Wall in Wagner Vandalized

Facebook

My dad served in the Korean War.  He was drafted when he was 26 years old.  He left his wife behind to serve his country.  Three of my uncles also served in the Korean War.  I had many high school classmates who served in Operation Desert Storm.

One way to remember their service and sacrifice is with a Veteran’s Memorial Wall.  Many cities and towns have built these memorials in honor of those who served.  It’s just a little token of appreciation.

My dad’s name, along with the names of many others I have known personally, are on the Memorial Wall in the City Park in Wagner, SD.  It’s beautiful!  The Wall was built in 1991.  This is a picture of the front of the Memorial taken this past summer.  The sides show the names of veterans from the Wagner area who served.

Unfortunately, the morning of Friday, September 13, this tribute to our heroes was vandalized.  Green apples were used to deface the memorial.  Foul language and other graffiti were drawn on the wall.

Who would do this?  This is un-American!  This shows no respect to these brave men and women who served this country, who fought and died for the idealism of liberty and freedom for all.  To quote the Wagner Post, this was “an embarrassing display of immaturity.”  This is a slap in the face to every man and woman who served and are currently serving, protecting this person’s right to walk the streets freely.  It’s just disgraceful.

At the time this story was written, there were no leads to the apprehension of a suspect. The city is working on cleaning the memorial.
