The company that supplies natural gas to customers in Sioux Falls is warning about a telephone scam that's using the company's name.

MidAmerican Energy Company, which is based in Des Moines, Iowa, says dozens of its customers have reported receiving phone calls claiming to be from MidAmerican Energy.

This part of the scam is all too familiar: the caller says there is a problem with the customer's account and that they need to make an immediate payment to avoid disconnection.

The caller then asks for credit card or bank account information to process the payment.

You;'ve heard this advice before: Credit card numbers, account information and personal information should not be provided to a suspicious or unsolicited caller.

MidAmerican Energy says if you get such a call, you should hang up immediately and notify law enforcement.

Then you are asked to contact MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632 to report the incident and seek assistance.
