Repair Affair is upon us. For one day, a group of volunteers use their talents to equip homes for people with disabilities.

Spurring this outreach is the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire and their members who donate labor to the effort free of charge. Cully Lebert who is President of the organization says the 60 people who step forward do their labor with love. “What we’re really trying to do accessibility-related projects for people so that they can stay in their home and be independent.”

Simple things like adding grab bars, wheelchair ramps, or lowering rods in closets are what this crew will do. “There’s such a need out there for this type of work,” Lebert said. “We’re just happy to make a dent in it.”

Since 1993, over 180 Repair Affair projects have been completed by 1,100 volunteers, with over 5,000 volunteer man-hours. The HBASE Public Relations Committee developed the idea in October 1993 as a way of updating the homes of the elderly and disabled - adapting to current needs at no charge to the homeowner.

Keep in mind for 2016, there are certain guidelines that need to be met in order to qualify. First, homeowners must complete applications by April to HBA office. Also, applicants must be either 65 years of age or older or have a permanent disability. There are financial guidelines that do involve income verification.
