USD’s Firsick is the Summit League’s Top Scholar-Athlete
As an accomplished pole vaulter, Bethany (Buell) Firsick is right at home soaring to new heights.
One year after reaching the pinnacle of her sport on the collegiate level with a national championship, Firsick is now in ‘rare air’ as the Summit League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Fenton, Missouri native just graduated with a 3.97 grade point average in psychology, after spending every semester on the Dean’s list in Vermillion. The award was based on voting by the league’s faculty athletic representatives.
In a USD press release, Frisick said:
What an honor. It is the perfect way to cap off what has been such a fun and exciting career at USD.
As an athlete, Firsick was a four-time first-team All-American, winning NCAA Division I meet last year, with a jump of 14’7 1/2″.
She is the second consecutive Coyote to earn the academic honor. Distance runner Jeff Mettler won the men’s award last summer.
