USD Track Teams Take Second At Summit League Championships

FARGO, ND — North Dakota State swept the men’s and women’s team titles at the Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Muncie, Ind.

The Bison easily won the men’s championship with 249 points.  The University of South Dakota was second with 168 points and South Dakota State third with 133.

NDSU’s women finsihed the three day meet 241.5 points.  The Coyotes were second with 154.5 and the Jackrabbits finished fourth with 107 points.

Among Saturday’s champions, USD’s Alexa Duling defended her 400-meter hurdles championship with a Summit League record time of 58.59 seconds.

South Dakota State’s Brooke Garner added to her hammer throw title with the discus championship on Saturday with a mark of 168’ 8.00”.

In the men’s competition, the Coyotes’ Michael Burrus won the 100-meters in a career-best time of 10.62.  Christian Nielsen took the title in the 200 with a time of 21.49 seconds.  USD also won the men’s 4×100 relay in a time of 40.92 seconds.

SDSU’s Luke Leischner won the Summit League championship in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.80 seconds.  The Jacks finished first in the 4×400-meter relay in 3:14.63.  Trent Lusignan added to his 10,000-meter run win on Thursday with a victoiry in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday, running a time of 14:29.42.

In the field events, South Dakota’s Peter Chapman won the pole vault with a season-best of 16 feet, 8 inches.  Cody Snyder added a title in the discus with a throw of 184-feet one-inch.

USD freshman Meghan Dennis claimed the women’s Newcomer of the Championship honor after setting a new league record in the javelin (157-10) on Thursday and placing sixth in the discus on Saturday (147-6).  Nielsen, who also added a fourth in the 400 in 49.17 and was part of the 4×400 relay team that finished fourth in 3:17.48, was named the Men’s Newcomer of the Championship.  It was the second-straight year the Coyotes swept the Newcomer of the Championship awards.

The NCAA West Regional on May 23-25 in Austin, Texas. The top-48 individual events will qualify and the top-24 relay teams will also make the cut.
