The pool of likely candidates is pretty deep to fill Republican leadership roles in the South Dakota Legislature. Within three days, the Majority Leader and Assistant Majority Leader have both departed.

On Monday, Legislators gathered to consider Governor Dennis Daugaard’s vetoes. Soon after the gavel fell to end the session in Pierre, Dan Lederman of Dakota Dunes resigned his District 16 post quoting a need for more family time as the impetus.

Two days hence, a statement came via press release from the Governor. State Sen. Tim Rave has announced his resignation from the South Dakota State Senate. Rave, a Baltic Republican who serves as senate majority leader, is resigning to accept a position with Sanford Health as enterprise vice president for public policy.

Rave has served in the state Senate since 2011, after serving four terms in the state House. He served as speaker of the House from 2009-11 and as senate majority leader since 2013, making him the only South Dakota legislator to have held both positions.

Rave represents District 25, which includes north and east Minnehaha County, including the cities of Dell Rapids, Baltic, Garretson, Colton, Lyons, Valley Springs and Rowena. It also includes the area in eastern Sioux Falls near South Sycamore Avenue and East 26th Street.

Rave was the Majority Leader in the Senate during the 2015 session and Lederman was just below the Baltic Republican on the totem pole as Assistant Majority Leader. The Majority Whip is the next level of hierarchy in the Legislature. The three that served in that role are Reid Holien of Watertown, Deb Soholt of Sioux Falls and Ernie Otten of Tea. Gov. Daugaard expects to name an appointee by late spring or early summer.
