It's all good backyard fun - until a bounce goes bad.  ABC News did a story on this and reported that even safety features like nets don't significantly decrease the risk of a trampoline injury.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a new policy statement calling trampolines "intrinsically dangerous."  According to estimates, roughly 100-thousand people get hurt each year.  Half of those are broken or dislocated bones.  Head and neck injuries can be catastrophic.

But trampoline makers says the data isn't sufficient and trampolines can have health benefits with proper supervision.

A side note to this story - we bought the kids a trampoline back when we lived in our old house.  Before putting it up, we called our insurance agent and found out our insurance company would drop us "on the spot" if we let the kids play on it.  Needless to say, we got rid of it that afternoon.

So, before you go out and spend the money on a trampoline, you may want to check with your insurance agent first.
