3-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was taken by ambulance from the Southern Iowa Speedway Monday night following a crash during a 360 winged sprint car race.

He was conscious and talking to responders.

A spokesman for Stewart confirmed with the Associated Press that he has broken his tibia and fibula in his right leg and required surgery.

Smoke was leading the 30-lap event with five laps to go when a lapped car spun in turn 4 and collected Stewart and two others.

The #14 Stewart-Haas race team was scheduled to test in Atlanta Motor Speedway on Tuesday and has been cancelled.

NASCAR’s most popular series, the Sprint Cup series, will race at Watkins Glen this weekend and a replacement for Stewart has not yet been announced.

Race winner Brian Brown said in a post race interview with the Des Moines Register,

First and foremost, we’re concerned about Tony and making sure he’s all right. He’s a huge asset to our sport, especially sprint car racing and an icon in the whole motorsports field. Anytime you see him wreck like that and then leave in an ambulance, it’s never good. Hopefully he’s OK. We weren’t going to win that race. We were probably going to run third or fourth.”

When asked what he saw regarding the Stewart wreck he said,

It looked like he got into a lapped car. When I got close, he was flipping cage down. I didn’t really have time to watch and see what was going on.”

Tony took a moment to chat with reporters before the green flag dropped before the Iowa race in the video below.

The Associated Press and Des Moines Register contributed to this report.
