Tom Petty to Auction Jaguar Convertible for Doctors Without Borders Organization
Tom Petty is parting with a sentimental piece of his past for a good cause, as he’ll auction off his 1996 Jaguar XJS Convertible on eBay to raise funds for the Doctors Without Borders organization.
Rolling Stone reports that the auction will kick off on eBay today, with a 10-day window for fans to bid on the champagne-colored vehicle. Petty says, “I have so many great memories associated with this car. When I began dating Dana [my wife], I asked her what her favorite car was. So, I phoned the office and said I wanted a champagne convertible Jaguar XJS. The next day, they delivered it to my house and showed me how everything worked and I took it for a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I was in heaven, as was Dana. This car has such an incredible design — my favorite car I ever owned. We sure are going to miss it.”
It should be noted that Jaguar stopped making the XJS in 1996, which should make the demand for the vehicle skyrocket that much more. While the singer is sad to see the car go, he can take comfort knowing that the funds raised will go to Doctors Without Borders medical and humanitarian efforts in over 60 countries.
In other Tom Petty news, the singer was recently one of many artists that took part in Dave Grohl‘s upcoming ‘Sound City‘ documentary. Keeping fans interested while the final details are being sorted out, Grohl has been posting video clips of some of the artists sharing their first musical memories. In Petty’s newly posted video (seen below), the singer recalls being a 10-year-old and getting to visit his uncle on a set where Elvis Presley was to perform. After that day, Petty said he was sold on rock and roll and began collecting records.
