A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was arrested in Brookings this week for allegedly driving under the influence while on the job.

Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers says they received a call from the Brookings Post Office shortly after 2:00 Wednesday afternoon. They were concerned that one of their carriers may have been drinking.

Police located the carrier walking part of his route, with his vehicle parked nearby. An officer conducted field sobriety tests and determined the mail carrier had been drinking.

Two open beer cans were reportedly found in the carrier's Postal Service vehicle.

The 33-year-old Brookings man was arrested for driving under the influence and open container in a motor vehicle.

His name was not released.
