Time to End Daylight Saving Time?

clock change

I’m super-pumped about Daylight Saving Time, said no one…ever. I believe, after not-so-careful research, that this idea was devised by a group of farmers in 1918 to punish city folk for gloating about their indoor toilets.

None-the-less, we lose an hour of sleep. At least we have all day Sunday to get our “time bearings” aligned again, right? Not so much.

According to data by a leading insurance company, Monday morning traffic accidents increase by 12% over any other weekday morning of the year. I found that fact the other day when I was surfing and forgot to bookmark it so you’ll just have to trust me on the validity of that nifty little fact.

It’s human nature to have a desire to recover what you lost. I’m still looking for that Charlie’s Angels poster I had taped to my fake-wood paneling 25 years ago in my childhood room in Rock Valley, Iowa.

So, how will I recover that lost hour?

  1. Put my keys next to the orange juice in the fridge so I won’t have to wonder what my toddler did with them. Saved: 7 minutes.
  2. Figure out how to program my cheap-but-it-was-a-gift coffee maker with only 2 buttons on it: Brew and Warmer. The box said it was programmable so I’m not giving up. Saved: 3 minutes.
  3. Take my 30 minute mid-day nap at my desk. Tip: have a fake looking graph thing labeled The Henderson Account next to you and your golden. Saved: 30 minutes.
  4. Record SNL instead of watching it ‘live’. It was a tough decision because Stefon was on but I’ll survive. Saved: 90 minutes.
  5. Floss in the car on the way to work. Has anyone seen those cool little one-handed flossers that look like a little football goalpost? Best invention since toast. Just sayin’. Saved: 2 minutes.

Total time saved: 132 minutes. Winner.

With that being said, I predict an end to observing Daylight Saving Time. Reason? Everything is embedded in technology and it’s too risky to keep adjusting computers to two time-changes per year. Airplane computers, mainframes, traffic controls, electrical grids, etc.

If you really hate the time changing practice you can move to Hawaii or Arizona. Those states still ignore the custom and do not observe it.

Is it time to follow suit? If you really feel strongly about it you an sign an online petition to stop the practice.

Until then, I’ll keep my Hendersen Account graphic nearby…
