The Wrap: This Week in Review
Here’s a few of the stories that had Sioux Falls and area talking this week:
First, a big THANK YOU to everybody who called in during the 48 hour Cure Kids Cancer radiothon. With your efforts and generosity, KIKN 100.5, Hot 104.7, Bee 102.7, and Mix 97-3, raised over $283,900 for children with cancer. That money not only stays right here in Sioux Falls, but also goes a long way to finding a cure!
A woman rescued at least 3 children before perishing in a house fire is called a hero by Sioux Falls Fire Department. Without regard for her own safety, Sulmi Guerra-Sandoval lowered the children out of a window of a burning house and despite people telling her to come out herself, she would not, in an effort to rescue another child. She never reached the 2-year old child and they both died in the blaze on S. Williams Ave. Tuesday morning. 3 more children in the home are still dealing with smoke inhalation issues.
Snowgates got a mayoral approval this week after being tested in Sioux Falls for 3 years. But it will still be up to voters to decide if all city plows will have them. It will go to a public vote in April of 2014. “Yipee!”, said everyone with a wide driveway…
The South Dakota State Fair, this week, restricted the use of golf carts at the Huron fairgrounds for this year’s State Fair. manager Jerome Hertel says it’s an effort to reduce risk of injury to the over 30,000 people who walk the grounds daily. “Great,” said the man who runs the Tilt-A-Whirl. “There Goes my ‘Carney-Cruiser'”!
A Mega Millions ticket sold in Flandreau was a $10,000 winner in last Tuesday’s drawing. That means 4 of the 5 white balls matches plus the Mega Ball (oh, so close!) The odds of winning that prize is roughly 1 in nearly 700,000.
From the “what are you…4?” department: On April Fools Day, the Great Plains Zoo received several calls, again, asking for such characters as Rory Lion, Ellie Fant, G. Raffe, Al Gator, and, Anna Conda. And, by the way, Harry Bear is unable to come the phone as well.
All Sioux Falls City golf courses have officially opened for the season. I refuse to golf if there is snow on the ball washer. It’s no fun to wash your balls in slush. Just sayin’.
Viral Video of the Week: I heard you Angela R., from the Facebook thread regarding the viral hit ‘the laughing rooster‘…the laughing baby is so funny! If you haven’t seen it…enjoy!
