This weekend's upcoming 'Walking Dead' season 4 installment "Live Bait" will take us into the past to show what the Governor's been up to since season 3 finale "Welcome to the Tombs," but might a more involved trip to the past be taking place when the "companion series" spinoff airs in 2015? A new rumor suggests 'The Walking Dead' may take us back to the beginning, setting its spinoff as a prequel!

The latest pot-stirring rumor comes from TVLine, who could only offer that "There’s increasing buzz that the offshoot will be a prequel of sorts, one that would chronicle the early days of the epidemic and the effort to contain it," while AMC understandably declined to comment. You'll want to take this with more than a few grains of salt, given "the project is in the very early stages of development and nothing is set in stone."

While a prequel set around the initial strands of the zombie apocalypse would fit series creator Robert Kirkman's earlier words about setting the spinoff with a different location and premise than the main series, any number of possibilities could accomplish that end. Not to mention, if AMC hoped for any kind of longevity to a 2015 spinoff of its most commercially successful property, for how many seasons could the series really be considered a "prequel" anyway? Last we checked, Rick Grimes wasn't in the hospital all that long before the world seemed pretty good and dead.

In conclusion, don't believe everything you read, as any number of rumors could arise between now and the 2015 launch, even if they end up truthful. Days like this, we're just glad us TV folk don't have to handle all the ongoing 'Star Wars' insanity rumor mills.

What say you? Would you want to see 'The Walking Dead' spinoff series as a prequel, or something concurrent, yet distinct with the main series?
