The Tutu Project
“This all sucks….and it’s stupid that it’s happening. There’s no reason that we have to suffer through this.” That’s what Bob Carey thinks about having to deal with breast cancer.
After his wife, Linda, was diagnosed with breast cancer, Bob did what he had to do to help her get through chemotherapy and fight her cancer. Bob started taking pictures of himself, in different places and situations, wearing a pink tutu. He braves the cold and snow, and even travels as far away as Italy to collect the pictures of himself in a pink tutu…just to make his wife and her friends laugh.
Bob says that when Linda would go to her chemo treatments, she would bring the photos of him in his pink tutu. She would share them with the other women in chemo to make them all laugh and to help pass the time, proving that Bob was standing beside her during this difficult time.
Bob and Linda have been together since 1986, and Linda says that Bob is her superhero because he’s not afraid to be himself and make her laugh. So when Linda was diagnosed, Bob grabbed a tutu and started taking pictures. He calls it his “self-therapy mode”, and when he’s out snapping the pictures that help make his wife feel better, he continues to get support from those who stop and ask “why the tutu?”
Because of all the support, Bob knew that he had to continue in his mission and taking his pictures. That’s when The Tutu Project was born. With a mission to bring laughter and understanding to a community and people that have endured too much, people can buy a calendar of Bob’s pictures. All proceeds help to provide support to women diagnosed with breast cancer, survivors, and their family members.
The main focus for Bob is not only to stand by his wife’s side, but also to help keep things light and not so serious. Linda’s main focus is to keep moving forward in life, and she says she can do that with the help of Bob.
