Prospective students who want to attend Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland no longer need to worry about the SATs, or essays, and even their transcripts.

What the private liberal arts school wants to know is what the student is all about.  And they want to get to know them through a two minute self produced video.

College President Jose Antonio Bowen says Goucher is leading the trend toward a new way for students to apply for college.

"The old system is broken, and I'm betting more and more schools will soon have alternative applications just like Goucher.  Video is how teens raised on social media communicate nowadays."

I'm curious what your thoughts are - is this a good thing or a bad thing? I would argue that test-taking and essay-writing are still needed tools, however, given where we're at these days with social media, why not try something new and incorporate some of that into the application process?

I'm willing to bet that we all know of someone (maybe it's even you) who struggles when it comes to taking a test.  School experts will tell you we're all wired differently - some are good at memorizing and taking tests; others, not so much.  In that case, perhaps a short self-produced video might prove to be the difference - the difference between being awarded a scholarship and not being able to further one's education.  It certainly can't hurt.

What are your thoughts?
