The CW Developing Supernatural Mary Queen of Scots Drama ‘Reign’
While The CW has seen some very male-friendly success in their recent gem 'Arrow,' and even with network mainstays like 'Supernatural,' we're starting to to wonder if the network has a chute built into the offices for the latest fantastical female-centric pilot. We've already heard about everything from 'Amazon' to 'Wunderland,' and even a 'Hunger Games' analogue, but what's next for the network? Why, Mary Queen of Scots, of course, but with magic!
With fantasy dramas looking to emulate the success of 'Game of Thrones' more and more these days, The CW has dipped its toe back into the female empowerment pool with yet another stylized supernatural drama. According to Deadline, the network will next adapt 'Reign,' a fantastical adaptation of teenage historical figure Mary Queen of Scots.
Written by 'CSI: Miami's' Laurie McCarthy and 'Outlaw's' Stephanie SenGupta, 'Reign' is described as a hybrid of 'Game of Thrones' and the story of Marie Antoinette, following the historical account of of the teenage queen, while adding in a "secret history of survival at French Court amidst fierce foes, dark forces and a world of sexual intrigue."
'Reign' comes as a number of other female-friendly adapted/updated projects for the network, including the current season’s ‘Arrow’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ as well as in-development projects like Reese Witherspoon's 'Expectations,' ‘Wunderland,’ ‘Amazon' and ‘Sleepy Hollow.’
What say you? Does the premise sound like something you could get into? Will 'Reign' have dominion over The CW?
