Sioux Falls residents recently voted to start school classes after Labor Day.

Some folks against the change have been very vocal about what they perceive as the negative effects this change will have on students, parents, & teachers.

Having been raised as a pasty white Minnesotan I wondered how I and so many others have persevered with a post Labor Day school start date.

I happen to know a very accomplished teacher from a very successful Minnesota school that starts classes in September.  I asked him how their school did?  This is his response:

Nationally Recognized School of Excellence, Eagan High School in Eagan, Minnesota is where I have been teaching English for 25 years. Some of the many national awards EHS has won include:

  • Redbook Top 100 High Schools - 1996
  • US News Ranked Top HS in State of Minnesota - 2012, 2013, 2014
  • Washington Post Top American High School - 2013, 2014

Eagan High School consistently ranks not just top in Minnesota, but top in the nation on ACT and SAT test scores. We have some of the most successful students in the United States of America. We have always started school after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day.

If these Minnesota students can thrive with an after Labor Day school start, don't you suppose Sioux Falls kids can too?
