South Dakota’s road woes continued Saturday as the Coyotes lost for the ninth time in 10 games away from Vermillion this season, falling 75-67 at Denver.

The loss is the fifth straight in Summit League play for USD.

Despite outshooting the Pioneers 50 to 44 percent in the first half, the Coyotes trailed at the break after turning the ball over eight times in the first 20 minutes, leading to 13 Denver points. Thanks to the extra possessions, the Pioneers took 12 more shots than the Coyotes in the first half, hitting four more field goals than USD, including eight 3-pointers.

Brett Olson, son of former Coyote Dan Olson, had four of those first half triples, but the one that stung the most came in the final seconds right before intermission.

The Coyotes had the ball, down nine, with a chance to play for one final shot and an opportunity to lead the deficit to as few as six, but Trey Norris turned the ball over with just seconds left, leaving Jalen Love with just enough time to get off a shot at the buzzer from just inside the mid-court stripe.  The 3-pointer went in as the half ended and instead of only being down six, USD was down 12, 38-26.

In the second half, the Pioneers quickly bumped the advantage to as many as 17, behind a game high 30 points from Olson who finished with six the Denver’s 13 3-pointers.

In the game’s final 30 seconds, the Coyotes tried to mount a furious comeback, and did trim the Pioneer advantage to six points with seven seconds left, but they eventually ran out of time.

Norris and Adam Thoesby each had 15 points to lead USD, Karim Rowson added 11.

South Dakota (9-13/3-4) is back on the road next week, playing at Fort Wayne and at IUPUI.
