Sting Musical Opening in Chicago
Sting’s musical, The Last Ship, will premiere next summer in Chicago before finding its way to Broadway. The New York Times reported that the show will run from June 10th to July 13th at Chicago’s Bank of America theatre before heading to the “Great White Way” some time after the initial run. No New York dates have been announced. The Last Ship is set in Sting’s hometown of Wallsend, England — near Newcastle — and includes collaborations with Brian Yorkey, who wrote the musical Next To Normal, and Academy Award Winner John Logan, best known for writing the Academy Award winning title song to the James Bond 007 thriller, Skyfall.
Sting’s album version of The Last Ship will be released on Tuesday, September 24th and marks his first new set of original music in a decade. The album features material originally composed for his proposed Broadway musical of the same name. The collection — which is not a soundtrack to the musical — also features songs that did not make the final score.
Guesting on The Last Ship is a surprising choice for Sting — with AC/DC’s Brian Johnson taking the mic for at least one track.
