Steve Perry's distinctive voice was omnipresent on the radio in the late '70s and '80s as frontman with Journey. He likewise became a staple on magazine covers and stages around the world. Below we've collected photos from throughout his career.

Perry was only one of several Journey singers since its 1973 start in San Francisco, but the first of two of his stints with the band — from 1978 to 1987 — was by far their most commercially successful. Often referred to as simply The Voice, Perry also earned respect from musical peers who lauded his power and range.

Journey took a long break in 1987, then regrouped for one more album with Perry, Trial By Fire in 1996. A hiking accident kept Perry from committing to a tour, however, and the band moved on without him. Two additional singers followed before they teamed up with current frontman Arnel Pineda for the longest such partnership in group history.

Perry occasionally filled the spaces with solo work, both during and after his time with Journey. He put out two records, a decade apart, in 1984 and '94, before returning with Traces in 2018 and the holiday album The Season in 2021.
