We spoke with Melissa Townsend, Nutrition Program Director at Active Generations here in Sioux Falls about the 12th Annual March for Meals campaign going on across the country and right here in Sioux Falls. March for Meals is an effort led by the Meals On Wheels Association of America to raise awareness about opportunities for communities to support their senior neighbors. Another goal is to raise funds to support the efforts of local Senior nutrition programs.

National statistics indicate that one in six senior citizens may be suffering from hunger. Here in Sioux Falls, Melissa said there has been an increase this winter of approximately ten clients a month to the Sioux Falls Meals on Wheels program, so they are always in need of volunteer drivers. They are hoping to start new routes soon in an effort to provide even more seniors with their services.

With these goals in mind Active Generations is holding a March for Meals Community Champions week beginning on Monday, March 17th. Our good friend Nancy Naeve from  KSFY and Fire Chief Jim Sideras are just two of our well-known citizens who will be helping to prepare and deliver meals in the Sioux Falls area.

You can help too, just by having a delicious drive-thru supper prepared by Meals on Wheels partner Reach Church. Your Mexican-themed meal will include a savory chicken enchilada, Spanish rice, corn casserole and frosted sugar cookie. Pick up your $8 tickets in advance at Active Generations at 2300 West 46th Street, and then grab your meal to go from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19th at Reach Church at 2201 W. Old Yankton Circle.
