‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Director’s Race: del Toro Out
As is the norm now, all anyone is talking about is the upcoming ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ and its subsequent trilogy, and who will be replacing George Lucas as the new ‘Star Wars‘ director. Just a heads up, this is all anyone will be rumbling about for the next couple years until the franchise gets off the ground, so get comfortable.
Most of what we know is speculation, especially with regards to who’ll be sitting in the director’s chair, but we do know who won’t be getting behind the camera. The latest name to pull himself out of the race for the title of ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ director is ‘Pacific Rim‘ helmer Guillermo del Toro.
If you’ll recall, the director made some comments a while back, saying, “You know, I saw it on the Internet, but I haven’t approached them, they haven’t formally approached me. I mean, I heard some rumblings.” While it’s true there was never anything official per se, it turns out these “rumblings” eventually became something more.
“We got one phone call to my agent saying, ‘Is Guillermo interested?’” he told The Playlist. “And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I’m pursuing stuff that I’m generating already… It was just a phone call, it didn’t go past that, it was very nice to be asked, but believe it or not, I’m busy enough.”
That’s an understatement. While del Toro is revving up to see his giant robot epic ‘Pacific Rim’ and creepy-kid horror flick ‘Mama‘ hit the big screen this year, there’s a ‘Pacific Rim 2‘ script already being developed in preparation for an official go ahead, plus del Toro will be directing the ‘Crimson Peak‘ movie and adapting the vampire novel ‘The Strain’ for TV, and there’s talk of him putting together his own “supernatural Avengers” for a ‘Heaven Sent’ flick. So… yeah, he doesn’t have much time to commit to helming a ‘Star Wars’ trilogy.
However, he did reveal who he’d like to take hold of the reigns. Unfortunately, this guy also pulled himself out of the race. “I think the fans deserve somebody that is just going to immerse themselves completely. As a geek, I would have loved to see Brad Bird take it.”
