The family of Kermit Staggers provided a status update on the ailing City Councilman. Going forward, Staggers will continue to heal and serve on Sioux Falls City Council.

Staggers has recently missed a few meetings due to health problems. The specific nature of his ailment was not shared at a gathering on Thursday at Carnegie Town Hall.

In a prepared statement, his daughter Ayn did reveal that the 68 year-old will not back away from his commitment as elected official. “As my father focuses on getting well, he will continue to serve the citizens as their at-large Council member.”

She also acknowledged the support the family has received. “The Staggers family wants to thank the people of Sioux Falls for their support and prayers concerning my father.”

Staggers political career spans 20 years with time served in the South Dakota Legislature before being elected to Sioux Falls City Council in 2002. He ran for Mayor in 2010, but lost to Mike Huether. His current City Council term began in 2012.
