On Saturday June 18 many will come out to either get support or provide strength for those who have been devastated by suicide.

This year marks the fifth edition of the Helpline Center’s Step Forward to Prevent Suicide Walk/Run in Sioux Falls. Event spokesperson Nancy Pavelko sums up the basis for the undertaking.

“The main point of it is to help those who have been a survivor of somebody that they’ve lost to suicide or to help those who struggle with depression and anxiety. We just want to make it aware that the Helpline Center is there for them.”

Pavelko’s life was turned upside down when her father unexpectedly committed suicide explaining you only have to be human to fall prey and there is help available.

“I didn’t really think of him as being depressed. He had never been treated. He was a devout Christian. It goes to show that it can happen to anybody. I want to make that clear for people because there is a stigma out there of the type that commit suicide. People need to be aware that there’s help out there for people who struggle.”

The 2015 event drew over one thousand people and raised 50 thousand dollars for the Helpline Center.

Registration for Saturday’s gathering at Falls Park begins at 8:30 AM with the walk starting at 9:00 AM. For additional information about this event or other services from the Helpline Center click here or dial 211.
