WalletHub just decided that South Dakota is the 46th best, or fifth worst, for a road trip vacation. I didn't think we'd be number one, but I was a little shocked that the state that is home to Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally would fare a little better.

Numbers were crunched and Wallethub came up with their rankings based on three very objective factors that had everything to do with quantity and nothing to do with quality. The factors ranked were driving and lodging costs, road conditions and safety rank, and fun and scenic attractions rank. We ranked 26th, 36th, and 46th respectively.

One of the stats that was also ranked in their study was "Number of Scenic Byways." Well, we're a sparsely populated rural state and we don't have a lot of designated scenic byways so we were tied for 46th in that category. But I took this less seriously when I saw that one of the others states we were tied with was Hawaii.

Speaking of Hawaii, how can that state be anything but 50th on this list? It not one, but a series of islands out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. You can't drive there. And while I enjoyed my road trip with my wife around the big island of Hawaii, we saw the whole island in a day.

As far as lists our fine state ends up on, this is not one to get upset over. On the bright side, North Dakota came in  49th.
