When the Cub Scouts knocked on our door over the weekend my wife raced for my wallet.

Supporting the neighborhood kids and their organizations isn't an obligation.  We, like many choose what charities to support annually.

Here in South Dakota residents ranked 13th in the country for helping that hand that's held out.  That amounts to 3.4% of every $1,000 in earnings.

As the recession lifted, poor and middle class Americans dug deeper into their wallets to give to charity, even though they were earning less.

Utah residents are the most generous.  New Hampshire is the tightest.
