PIERRE - South Dakota lawmakers have given final approval to a bill that would make the state's concealed weapons permits valid for an extra year.

The House voted unanimously to make the permits valid for five years, up from the current four years. The Senate approved the bill earlier, so it will become law if signed by Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

Rep. Scott Craig of Rapid City says making concealed weapons permits valid for five years will bring South Dakota's law in line with laws in the neighboring states of Wyoming and Nebraska. He says making permits valid for an extra year will save time and money for South Dakota citizens.
