The South Dakota Department of Emergency Management has implemented a new way to organize and track both responders and equipment for emergencies and large scale events.

Each person and equipment piece is issued a bar code. Once enacted, the incident commander has a real-time look at who is helping with the response and what equipment is being used.

The system was first used for the Delmont tornado in May and then again at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with great success.

The system is used in the neighboring states of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Iowa.
