Terry Redlin, the South Dakota artist whose famous outdoor and wildlife paintings grace walls and galleries world-wide, has died at the age of 78, according to family members.

For eight consecutive years, 1991 through 1998, Redlin was named America's Most Popular Artist in annual gallery surveys conducted by U.S. Art magazine.

One of his first works to get published was titled "Winter Snows" which appeared on the cover of The Farmer magazine in 1977. Two years later, he became a full-time artist.

The iconic artist announced his retirement in June 2007.

In Sioux Falls, Redlin has a namesake elementary school, which opened in 1998.

The Redlin Art Center in Watertown, features 160 original oil paintings by Terry Redlin as well as many prints, sketches and childhood drawings. Since opening in the summer of 1997, the Redlin Art Center has welcomed more than 3 million visitors.
